Cold Email: First-Touch Outreach Template

A cold email template for the first message in a sequence — built to prove relevance fast, avoid sounding like an ad, and earn a reply instead of a delete.

When to use this

This is the opening email in a cold outreach sequence — the first thing a prospect sees from you, before any relationship exists. It’s built for B2B sellers reaching out to a specific role at a specific company, not a mass blast. Use it after you’ve done at least sixty seconds of research on the recipient: their company, their role, or a trigger event (a funding round, a job change, a product launch) that makes the timing plausible.

Why it works

The template leads with a specific, verifiable observation about the prospect rather than a claim about your own product. That ordering matters: most cold email gets deleted in the first line because it opens with “I” or a company name the recipient doesn’t recognize. Proving you did research before pitching anything buys you the next two sentences of attention. The ask at the end is small and low-friction — a yes/no question, not “let’s schedule a 30-minute call” — because a first-touch email should reduce the cost of replying, not raise it. This structure pairs well with the sequencing approach covered in the cold email lead generation guide, and if this email gets no response after a few follow-ups, the cold email breakup template gives you a clean way to close the loop.

The template

Subject: quick question about [Company Name]’s [specific process/goal]

Hi [First Name],

Noticed [specific trigger — e.g., “[Company Name] just opened a Jakarta office” / “you posted about scaling outbound last week” / “[Company Name] switched CRMs in Q1”] — usually that means [Their Pain Point] becomes a bigger priority than it was a quarter ago.

We work with [1-2 recognizable similar companies or “teams like yours in [Their Industry]”] to fix exactly that, typically getting them [specific, believable result — e.g., “40% more qualified meetings without adding headcount”].

Worth a quick look, or is this not a priority for [Company Name] right now?

Customization tips

  • Replace the trigger line with something you can actually verify — a stale or generic “trigger” (e.g., “I saw you’re in the software industry”) reads as fake personalization and undermines the whole email.
  • Swap the closing question to match your product: for a lower-commitment ask, try “Mind if I send over a 2-minute example?” instead of pushing straight to a call.
  • Keep the total email under 100 words. If you need three paragraphs to explain the value, the offer isn’t specific enough yet — tighten it before adding more copy.
